G8 Protest
Evian/Geneva 2003
The meeting of the G8 in 2003 was in Evian, France the area around the meeting was sealed off by the police so most of the demonstrations and protests were focused on Lausanne and Geneva. The protests saw Switzerlands' largest ever demonstration with over 100 000 marching to the French border where they were met by other protestors coming the other way from France.
The morning of the beginning of the G8 meetings in Geneva was kicked off with street blockades to stop the various press and support personnel from being able to get to Evian, this was succesful in delaying the start of the meeting by a few hours.
In central Geneva all the shops in the main shopping and banking were boarded up with a rather strange yellow board. The enclosures of Capital made visible, the images of commodity desire negated, as the shops remained open this made for a very strange atmosphere, one made more interesting by the fact that some activists then laid out paints so people could express themselves on these blank canvases, above is a selection of images taken in these areas, click on the image for a larger version.
